Welcome to Age Awareness

Age Awareness is an awareness campaign aimed towards people aged 21+ who are in their final years of college and will be moving into their chosen creative fields in the near future. The Campaign is concerned with increasing their awareness of people aged 65+ who may feel excluded from society because they feel they aren't as tech savvy or up to date with modern day online services and technologies. With the constant ongoing technological advancements in our society this research project looks to gather research findings from the 65+ and then share this information to you.

Focus Groups

Age Awareness collected all its data from focus groups where the majority of people would fit into the 65+ years demographic. There was a total of 3 focus groups held based in the Dundalk Area, which totaled up to 28 participants overall. The focus groups involved were Dundalk Orchestra, Glenn Dimplex and Dromintee GAA. For each focus group there was a laptop and tablet running the interactive demo so any participants could get involved and give it a try. Accompanying this was a quick questionnaire which looked to gather data on how these participants aged 65+ felt about the internet and technology, and would they be willing to learn if there was help or support provided. Progress made through each of these focus group was successful with majority of participants willing to contribute and get involved.

With the data collected from the research demographic the findings was then taking and partnered with a questionnaire which was aimed for our target audience.

Learning Demo

The most popular device being used by all participants the data showed that it was the mobile phone which came in at 41.7 percent. Likewise, data collected for statements which had a range from 1-5 on whether “I dont understand computers/ the internet” and “I’m too old to use the internet”, interestingly the majority of each question came in as neutral with neither swaying more towards I strongly agree or disagree. For “I’m too old to use the internet” the data recorded a percentage of 30.4 percent for neutral.

Likewise, for the question “I don't understand computers/the internet” the data shows that the majority percentage for this question came in at 43.5 percent for neutral. With these findings it means that majority of the participants are currently on the fence which isn't necessarily a bad thing because for some this is seen as unfamiliar territory.

Final Synopsis

The participants of the 65+ demographic were highly interested and concerned with technology but would appreciate if they were given potential guidance or support on  how to use different technologies as well as have them user friendly for their generation. By gathering research which highlights these opinions of the 65+ in Ireland it has proven to give insight and valuable knowledge to graduates when considering different age demographics.
